The 1958 Lee Montgomery Phoenix were chosen Class 3A State Champions by the Birmingham Post Herald

Lees 26-19 victory over rival Sidney Lanier before 21,000 fans at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery clinched the UPI championship for the Generals. They had led the poll since mid October and were determined to not relinquish the top spot.

The school only began playing football four years ago but under the direction of coach Tom Jones quickly moved into position as one of the title contenders. The Generals averaged 28.5 points per game while holding their opponents to 8.4.

Quarterback Bart Kennedy, halfbacks John Moore and Rodney Bell and fullback Ben Wood paced the outstanding backfield which specialized in long distance scoring. Craig Hopson, at center, was the leader in the offensive line.
